Gut Health Is 70% Of Your Immunity, How Healthy Is Your Gut?

healthy-gut.jpg

Hello all! I'm back! As some of you may be aware, a couple weeks ago my eardrum burst. It is a super painful experience I wouldn't wish on anyone. Because I now have a hole in my ear I was put on 10 days of antibiotics, and I can't get my ear wet for 2 months until it heals up, bummer news for the summer season, right?!

As with any time I have had to take antibiotics, as soon as I took my first one, I started having digestion issues.

Good And Bad Bacteria

You've probably heard by now that there are both good and bad bacteria in your gut. The good bacteria are super beneficial in helping you to fight off disease, and aid in digestion. You want to have more good bacteria than bad bacteria to keep your system in balance.

However, there are many things that can upset this balance.

Here are a few examples:

  • Antibiotics

  • Age

  • Diet

  • NSAID's (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)

Basically, any time you take an antibiotic you are wiping out all of your good bacteria. Your diet affects your gut bacteria every day. As you may guess, healthy food builds good gut bacteria and unhealthy/processed food feeds the bad bacteria.

Fermented Foods

Something that can improve your gut health is fermented foods.. Things like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, kefir water, yogurt etc. People used to eat fermented food all the time, but now it is more rare. Start adding some back into your diet, my favorites are kimchi and kombucha!

Do You Have Any Of These Symptoms? Your Gut Might Need A Reset

What if you aren't sure if your gut needs help? I can tell you that almost all of my patients could benefit from gut support. We already mentioned it plays a HUGE role in your immunity (70%)! But did you also know it could also help you sleep better and even clear up your skin?

Some symptoms of people that could benefit from a GI support program:

  • Stomach discomfort on a frequent basis

  • Frequent nasea

  • Yeast Infection

  • If you get sick often

  • Lower bowel gas several hours after eating

  • Passing a large amount of foul-smelling gas

  • Indigestion 30-60 min after eating, or as long as 3 or 4 hours after eating

  • Burning stomach sensation that eating relieves

  • Gas shortly after eating

  • Stomach "bloating"

A 6 week GI Support Program That Can Get You Back on the Right Track

If any of the above symptoms sound like you... I've got something that will help! Standard Process has a 6 week GI Flora Balance Program that is awesome!

I just started this program myself a little over a week ago while on the antibiotics and guys I am absolutely loving it! I feel so awesome on this program, I am thinking about continuing it after the 6 weeks is over. GI issues are something I've struggled with my whole life, so I know I have some damage to heal.

This program is so easy. It only involves 4 supplements, or 5 if you want to make the process a bit easier.

According to MediHerb (the herb company that is associated with standard process that I use all the time) founder Kerry Bone, there are 4 key principles to GI health: everyday digestion, weeding, seeding, and feeding.

Everyday Digestion: supports digestive functionality with appropriate acid and enzyme levels that are key for digestion and absorption

Weeding: encourages a healthy intestinal environment to maintain proper GI Flora

Seeding: supports healthy gut flora

Feeding: provides food for microorganisms in the lower GI tract

How The Program Works

This program incorporates all of those elements. There are 2 herbs, and 2 supplements. Three of them are pills that are very easy to take. The 4th supplement is Whole Food Fiber which is a powder. This is where I added the extra supplement. You could add the whole food fiber to any smoothie. I chose instead to also order SP Complete and mix it in with that shake. SP complete essentially adds vital nutrients to any diet and supports many body systems and organs. SP Complete comes flavorless, or you can get it in chocolate or vanilla flavor, or dairy free.

Days 1 and 2 (each week) are a little different than days 3-7, but they are all very simple. I noticed a difference the very first day. I am a person that is very sensitive and can notice changes quickly, but I'm sure anyone on this program would notice an improvement!
